Orencia

Orencia is a biologics used for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis with the intention of slowing down the progression of joint damage. Rheumatoid arthritis is a disease of the immune system which consists of complex network cells, such as the T cell. If T cells are activated they cause the inflammation and swelling that is associated with rheumatoid arthritis. Orencia targets the T cells, reducing its activity, causing a chain reaction to other related cells. Adults may use Orencia alone or with other Rheumatoid Arthritis treatments, except for TNF antagonists.

Based on the dosage the patient’s rheumatologist prescribes, Orencia is given intravenously through a 30 minute treatment. A second dose is infused around the 15th day mark and the third dose around the 30 day mark. Once the third infusion is completed, treatment will occur every four weeks.
